Gear Geek: New Balance Zante V.2

2016 Brings an update to the popular Fresh Foam Zante.

New Balance brings back their speedy daily trainer with some simple updates that solidify the success of this shoe. The 12 months from the shoes introduction only provides time for New Balance to tinker with the shoes upper and outsole materials.

Upper

The configuration of the mesh construction and added material provides a improved fit. The heel counter has increased material to provide a little more substance to the clutching affect around the calcaneus and achilles. Moving forward, the "Arch Wrap" feels more subtle removing the "Arch Bump" from v1. When transitioning into the forefoot, the most notable change to the fit is the increased volume in the toe box with the removal of the additional overlays. This immediately removes the pressure on the top of the instep and toes. I would still call this shoe a performance fit - my slightly wider forefoot appreciated this simple alteration.

Midsole/Outsole

The new configuration of the hexagon pattern provides the illusion of a thicker height, but the shoe remains unchanged from v1. The shoe does feel a touch firmer, but this could be due to the time of the year I was testing the shoe or the new outsole configuration. The midsole still delivers an ideal balance of cushion and softness that I prefer.

The outsole pattern also sees a change from v1 with larger hexagon. This can affect the flex of the shoe as well as the pressure dispersion under compression. Still a light weight compound, I would not expect the same mileage durability as the Vazee or Boracay.
