This article highlights the results of second-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of
5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events (although the program that processes the meet scores does not have access to individuals in a relay). Teams are limited to three athletes per event. Stay with us for the entire tournament to see which boys and girls teams reign supreme in this virtual meet format.

No. 11 Central (CS) vs. No. 27 West Hills (SD)

San Diego Section school West Hills as a No. 27 seed stunned No. 6 Bakersfield Liberty in the first round. Would history repeat itself in Round 2 against another Central Section foe?

Well, in a word, nope!

Not this time around.

Central from Fresno, in capturing four of six event categories and almost breaking even in West Hills' strongest event, rolled to a second-round victory in the girls bracket of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.

Central won the hurdles, jumps, sprints, and relays, pitching shutouts in the hurdles and relays, and only gave up 10 points in the throws in advancing to the girls elite round of eight.

Junior Brandy Atuatasi, among the state's elite throwers, contributed wins in the discus and shot for West Hills, but Central claimed the other eight points in that category. Sophomore Savanna Gillespie had winning times in both the 800m and 1600m leading West Hills to an event win in the distances.

One area propelling Central into the next round is the 300m hurdles where sophomore Bella Gragnani (46.52), freshman Riley Costales (46.86) and senior Monea Jennings (47.02) rank Nos. 11-15-18, respectively, in CA for marks achieved before the 2020 outdoor season was suspended.

Jennings, who also ranks CA No. 11 in the 100mH with a best of 15.11 (1.7), is a major reason Central posted an 18-0 score in the hurdles.

Central also appears in the state's top-10 rankings list at No. 7 in the the 4x400 relay (4:02.31) and at No. 8 with senior Aniya Hoggatt in the high jump (5-4). Hoggatt (HJ), senior Simone Johnson (TJ) and sophomore Tristen Tompkins (PV) each added five-point event wins to Central's 26-point haul in the jumps.

Junior Sariyah Copeland in the 100m and 200m joined Gillespie as double-event winners for Central.
