This article highlights the results of second-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events (although the program that processes the meet scores does not have access to individuals in a relay). Teams are limited to three athletes per event. No. 3 Buchanan (CS) vs. No. 19 Mater Dei (SS)

When the winning team collects points from 18 different athletes against a program with traditional talent like Mater Dei, its time to realize that maybe Buchanan isn't seeded high enough? 

Yep, the Bears got points in every event except the 100m and 4x100m relay and added to the scoreboard from 18 different boys in their 28-point second-round victory in the boys bracket of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.

While the 18 boys are all listed below, a couple of standouts for Buchanan included senior thrower Kyler Van Grouw (first in both throws), senior distance runner Ronnie Barrett (first in the 800m and 1600m), and junior Austin Gillen (first in the 400m, second in the 800m). 

Mater Dei swept the 100m dash led by sophomore Domani Jackson, got wins in both hurdles from senior Patrick Keegan and picked up six points in the jumps from senior Albert Criger.

TCU-bound Van Grouw, even in an interrupted 2020 outdoor season, quickly proved that he was the best dual throwers in the U.S. His 193-8 discus throw from Bobbi Bass (Feb. 29) ranks CA No. 2 and U.S. No. 5, and his 58-0 from the Sanger Spring Classic (March 7) ranks CA No. 6 and U.S. No. 15. Both marks are PRs.
