Nevada Middle School Outdoor Recap: March 23-29 Top Performances
Nevada's middle school athletes put together a strong week from March 23-29, with top marks coming out of both the Pacific Coast Shockwaves Invitational and Tah-Neva League: 6th Grade Meet #1.
From sprint doubles to distance wins and all-around field event performances, several athletes turned in some extremely impressive marks this week.
Sprints
Lane Ponder (Las Vegas Elite Runners) had one of the top boys sprint weeks in the state, running 13.58 in the 100 and 28.05 in the 200 at the Pacific Coast Shockwaves Invitational. He also added a 13-2.25 mark in the long jump.
At the Tah-Neva League meet, Dane Neuberger (North Tahoe High) led the boys 100 with a 14.00, followed by Trent Meadows (Excel Christian) at 14.15. In the 200, Duke Arbogast (Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada) ran 30.90 for the top time, while William Kaftan (Grace Christian Academy) followed in 31.83.
On the girls side, Amonie Johnson (Las Vegas Elite Runners) ran 14.37 in the 100 and 29.79 in the 200 at Pacific Coast. In northern Nevada, Victoria Hovenic (Sage Ridge School) had one of the better doubles of the week, running 14.46 in the 100 and 29.42 in the 200.
Other strong girls sprint performances came from Hadley Holway (North Tahoe High) (14.67), Harper Chaparro (Carson High School) (15.40), and Gabi Lienti (Excel Christian), who ran 31.56 in the 200.
400 And Up
Soren Anderson (Las Vegas Elite Runners) posted one of the top boys distance doubles of the week, running 1:07.35 in the 400 and 2:42.63 in the 800.
At Tah-Neva, Hawken Schuessler (Lake Tahoe School) won the boys 400 in 1:15.00, while Jackson Munoz (St. Teresa of Avila School) ran 1:17.00 and later came back to win the 1600 in 6:20.00.
The boys 800 also had a few solid marks, led by Benny Ramirez (North Tahoe High) at 2:52.00, Matthew Cooper (Carson High School) at 2:56.00, and Andrew Miner (Carson High School) at 3:00.00. Miner also placed second in the 1600 at 6:37.00.
On the girls side, Avari Dunbar (Las Vegas Elite Runners) led the week in the 800 with a 2:29.70 at Pacific Coast, while Alianna Parchment (The Hive Sports Club) followed at 2:46.88. In Tah-Neva competition, Adlee Johnson (Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada) won the 800 in 2:47.00.
Amonie Johnson also posted the top girls 400 of the week at 1:11.38, while Harper Chaparro led the Tah-Neva field at 1:15.00. Adelyn Tyler (Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada), Gianna Cruz (Carson High School), and Lilly Pulido (Grace Christian Academy) all followed at 1:18.00.
In the girls 1600, Katy Carman (St. Teresa of Avila School) and Winnie Johnson (St. Teresa of Avila School) both ran 6:20.00 to share the top mark.
Relays
Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada swept the 4x100 relays at the Tah-Neva League meet.
The boys team ran 1:02.00, followed by North Tahoe High at 1:03.00. Carson High School, St. Teresa of Avila School, and Grace Christian Academy all came through in 1:04.00.
On the girls side, Pinecrest won in 1:01.00, ahead of Carson High School and St. Teresa of Avila School, both at 1:05.00.
Throws
Fabio Buckley (Sage Ridge School) led the boys shot put with a 28-10, narrowly ahead of Ethan Martinez (Carson High School) at 28-1. Houston Hohl (Carson High School) put the shot 26-3.
On the girls side, Alexis Lockhart-Hayden (The Hive Sports Club) had the top mark of the week at 19-7.5 from Pacific Coast.
The top marks from Tah-Neva came from Ataya Belmont (Carson High School) (19-3) and Brooklyn Bell (Carson High School) (19-2), with Quinn McKeon (Lake Tahoe School) right behind at 18-11.25.
Jumps
Kayin Burgess (Mino Foundation NV) put together one of the best field event weekends of anyone in the state, going 15-0.75 in the long jump and 32-4.75 in the triple jump at Pacific Coast.
In the Tah-Neva boys long jump, William Kaftan led the way at 11-11, followed closely by Trent Meadows at 11-10.5and Hawken Schuessler at 11-10.
On the girls side, Denali Stephens (Eagle Valley MS) won the long jump with an 11-7, while Alianna Parchment went 11-5 and Adelyn Tyler followed at 11-3.
In the high jump, Dylan Neuberger (North Tahoe High) led the boys with a 3-10, while Amara Childs (Carson High School) matched that height to lead the girls.
Overview
A few names showed up more than once across the week, especially in the sprint and jump events, while others started to separate themselves in the 800 and 1600. Nevada's middle school season is still early, but last week gave a solid first look at some of the athletes already putting together strong starts this spring.
