Nevada Outdoors March 30-April 5 Top Performances and Breakthroughs
Nevada athletes kept the outdoor season rolling last week, highlighted by several standout performances both in-state and out of state. Top competitors continued to sharpen up while a handful of breakthrough athletes delivered some of the biggest jumps of the spring so far.
From elite marks posted at the Oregon Relays and Trabuco Hills Invitational, to major personal records thrown down at weekday meets and invitationals across Nevada, the week offered a strong mix of proven stars and emerging names.
Sprints
Anthony Scott (Spring Valley) put together one of the more eye-catching improvements of the week in the boys 100 meters, dropping a 10.80 at the Cimarron Weekday to win a 46-athlete field. The mark represented a major step forward from his previous best of 11.13 and immediately moved him closer to the top sprinters in the state.
At the Oregon Relays, Tyler Russell (Reed) continued to prove why he's one of Nevada's top sprint threats. He ran 10.84 in the 100 and 21.91 in the 200, giving him the top junior mark in Nevada in both events.
On the girls side, Alyssa Dixon (Galena) had one of the best all-around performances anywhere in Nevada last week. She won the 100, 200, and long jump at the Silver Talon Invitational, which included a PR run of 24.28 in the 200 after previously clocking a 24.36 in March. (She won the 100 in 11.80.)
Jiselle Dudley (Coronado) also delivered a major sprint breakthrough, running a PR of 24.66 in the 200 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. That mark cut down her previous best of 25.24 and came against strong competition, adding more weight to the performance. She also won the 100 meters in 12.41 at the Liberty Weekday.
Not far behind in terms of overall impact, Lola Kelley (Coronado) turned in one of the better all-around sprint weeks in the state. She dropped a PR of 25.36 in the 200 at Trabuco Hills, improving from 26.15, and later added another personal best with 44.87 in the 300 hurdles.
Middle Distance & Distance
A major 800 breakthrough came from Jakhai Jones (Las Vegas), who ran 2:02.05 to win the Las Vegas Weekday meet on March 31. After entering the week with a best of 2:12.40, Jones took a huge step forward.
On the girls side, Brooke-Lynne Miller (Coronado) put together one of the top distance performances of the week at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. She won the 3200 meters in 10:41.57, improving on her previous best of 10:55.40, and also placed third in the 800 in 2:17.11. That combination of range and quality continues to make her one of Nevada's most reliable distance threats.
Lucia Avril (North Tahoe) won the 3200 in 11:34.74 at the Big George Invitational, lowering her previous best of 11:53.40 and moving to No. 1 among Nevada freshmen in the event. She also lowered her PR in the 1600 to 5:15.94, further cementing that she is quickly becoming one of the state's most promising young distance runners.
Ava Swensen (Lowry) also had a productive week in the middle distances, winning the 800 in 2:22.66 at Big George after entering with a best of 2:25.82. For good measure, she added another PR in the 400, going 1:00.21.
Hurdles
Ahtziri Gadzuric (Coronado) put together a few impressive breakthrough performances, led by a PR of 44.43 in the 300 hurdles at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. That performance improved on her previous best of 45.02 and came alongside PRs in both the 200 (25.26) and 100 (12.67).
Lola Kelley's 44.87 in the same event also deserves mention here. Coronado has nice top-end depth in the longer hurdle event heading into the championship stages of the season.
Jumps
The clearest headliner was Mara Kuchnicki (Carson), who cleared 11-3 in the pole vault to win the Big George Invitational. Not only did the mark improve her previous best of 10-3 by a full foot, but it also set a Carson High School record.
Back in the horizontal jumps, Alyssa Dixon's 18-10 long jump was another major marker of progress. She improved from her previous best of 18-5, which had been set at the 2024 state championship, and added that mark to an already huge sprint week.
Aniyah Burress (Legacy) also had a strong all-around showing, particularly in the horizontal jumps. She led Nevada juniors in both events last week, winning the triple jump (38-10) and placing second in the long jump at 16-5.5. Off the runway, she also ran 12.64 in the 100.
Throws
Kayden Hulet (Debbie Smith) delivered the top throws performance of the week on the boys side, sweeping both events at the Silver Talon Invitational. He won the discus with a chuck of 196-0 and the shot put with a heave of 51-2.75. His discus mark was a new personal best over his previous top mark of 188-4.75, set last June.
The other major throws storyline came from Corbin Sontag (Galena). Sontag won the shot put with 44-5 at the Little George JV Invitational after entering with a best of 40-4.25. That mark moved him to No. 2 among Nevada freshmen this season. He also improved in the discus with 113-8, up from 99-7, making it a double PR day.
Overview
Last week's Nevada slate featured a little bit of everything: established stars holding form, high-level marks against major out-of-state competition, and several athletes posting the kind of breakthroughs that can change the direction of a season.
