State Meet Records Fall at 2023 NIAA State Championships

NIAA State Championship Highlights


The 2023 NIAA Boys and Girls State Track and Field Meet was held at Liberty High School, in Henderson, Nevada. This year marks the first time Nevada has had a five division state track and field state championship. This years meet was a big year for the girls as they set five state meet records and 2 All time Nevada records.

Liberty High School was host to the largest state meet in recent history. There were 90+ schools participating across five divisions; 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A. The meet was split between two sessions, Friday evening and Saturday.

Day 1 saw Iyonna Codd of Centennial High School storm to a new All-Time Nevada and State Meet record of 11.64 (-1.4 m/s) in the Girls 5A 100m. Codd confirmed her good season form as she ran a slightly windy 11.46 (+2.2 m/s) at the 5A Southern Regional to qualify for the state Championship.

Chloe Huyler of Sage Ridge School followed Codd and broke the State Meet Record in the Girls 1A 1600m. Huyler ran a blazing 4:51.84 to break the 17 year old record of Wendy Harris (Lund), 5:13.22 set back in 2006.

Day 2 was kicked off with a bang, 2 State meet records in the first events of the day! Chloe Huyler of Sage Ridge was back in action this time in the Girls 1A 3200m Run. Chloe stopped the clock at 10:26.12, breaking her own state meet record from last year by 50 seconds (11:16.46 - 2022)!

Four races later, Eleanor Raker of Galena High School book the Girls 5A 3200m Run state meet record running 10:29.14. She broke the record of Abby Miller (Green Valley) of 10:38.26 from back in 1997.


The day wasn't over for the record books. Iyonna Codd (Centennial) posted a winning time in the Girls 5A 400m just out side the state meet record. Codd clocked 54.37, scoring a US Top 50 mark in the process. She scared the state meet record of 54.23 set by Valencia Wilson (Cheyenne High School) from 2004. Iyonna was not done there.

Iyonna Codd returned in the Girls 5A 200m where she started the meet being the All Time Nevada 200m record holder at 23.73 from the 5A Southern Regionals in 2023. Codd stormed the bend and stopped the clock at a new Nevada All Time and State Meet Record of 23.62 (+0.4 m/s). This also place Codd in the top 50 in the USA.
