Season Preview: 1A Boys

As the 2023 season this week, March 2nd, we want to look at what may be ahead for the season in Class 1A. Last spring Spring Mountain Boys win the state title.  Spring Mountain the defending state champions were able to amass 132 points to claim the title in 2022. 65 (Sixty-Five) points back was a very close battle for the podium positions. Mineral County (67), Beatty (66), Eureka (62), and Sierra Lutheran (61) battled to the last event to decide who would take the team second and third place positions. Spring Mountain returns nine(9) state finalist from last years championship team. Individual state champion Elijah Rush (110m hurdles - 1st, 300m hurdles - 3rd) is joined by podium finishers Demetrius Ivanoff (400m - 2nd, 100m, 200m), Mikeem Davis (Long Jump - 2nd, Pole Vault), and Prestyn Murphy (Triple Jump - 2nd).

Mineral County was able to secure a second place team finish at state in 2022 on the back of 3 relay wins (4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m). Andre White, a leg on each winning relay, also won the triple jump and is one(1) of 4 returners for Mineral County. Andre will be joined by discus runner-up and shot put finalist Ryan JaramillloCade Torres (300m hurdles, relays), and Triston Jones (High Jump, relays). Beatty the state third placed team, returns 3 state finalist from last year including podium finishers Francisco Granados (800m - 2nd) and Effrain Moreno (300m hurdles - 2nd, 1600m 3rd). They are joined by Senior Victor Alonso who was a finalist in both Long Jump and Triple Jump.

A team on the rise is Sierra Lutheran, last years 5th placers. Sierra Lutheran is lead by state champion in the 400m, Senior Flynn Scheibe (400m - 1st, 200m - 2nd, 100m - 3rd) and Sophomore Joshua Fox, state runner-up 1600m and 3rd placer in the 3200m. They will be joined by returning state finalist Hunter Rowlatt (400m) and Chandler Ricks (3200m). They are also returning all legs of their sprint relays.
