Nevada Middle School Outdoor Track: Performances from Week One
The middle school outdoor track season in Nevada began last week with athletes from Discovery Charter Middle School opening competition at the SUHSD Middle School Meet #2. While the early results are limited, several athletes produced solid performances across the sprint, distance, and field events to begin the outdoor season.
Here's a look at some of the top marks from the opening week.
Bacani and Mendoza Lead the Sprint Events
The sprint events featured several strong early performances on both the boys and girls sides.
On the boys side, Shane Mendoza (Discovery Charter MS) posted the fastest time of the week in the 100 meters, running 15.17. Mendoza also led the field events with a 12-10 long jump, giving him two top marks during the opening meet.
Teammate Andrew Toubia (Discovery Charter MS) also had a strong showing in the sprints, running 16.57 in the 100m before returning to win the 200 meters in 35.17. Toubia added a 10-6 long jump, ranking second in that event.
For the girls, Ana Bacani (Discovery Charter MS) led the way in the sprint events, running 14.49 in the 100 meters and 29.53 in the 200 meters to post the fastest marks of the week in both events.
Close behind her in the sprints was Lewhat Ghermai (Discovery Charter MS), who ran 14.56 in the 100m and 30.34 in the 200m, finishing second in both races.
Lehman Highlights the Longer Sprint
The girls 400 meters was led by Christa Lehman (Discovery Charter MS), who ran 1:11.03 to take the top time in the event. Lehman also finished third in the 200 meters, running 30.39, showing strong range from the short sprints through the longer sprint distance.
Distance Event Early Leader
The distance events saw Danilo Sanchez (Discovery Charter MS) produce the top mark of the week in the 1600 meters, running 6:13.75 to claim the early-season lead.
Field Event Performances
The long jump featured top marks from both the boys and girls competition.
As mentioned previously, both Shane Mendoza (Discovery Charter MS) and teammate Andrew Toubia (Discovery Charter MS) showed their versatility leading both the sprint events and the long jump with a 12-10 and 10-6, respectively.
For the girls, Siena Saunders (Discovery Charter MS) posted the top mark with an 8-7 long jump.
Early Season Outlook
While the middle school outdoor season is just beginning, several athletes have already established themselves as early leaders. Sprinters such as Ana Bacani, Lewhat Ghermai, and Shane Mendoza opened the season with the fastest times in their events, while athletes like Andrew Toubia and Christa Lehman showed versatility across multiple disciplines. As more meets take place in the coming weeks, additional performances will likely emerge and provide a clearer picture of the top middle school athletes to watch this season.
