Nevada High School Track & Field: Mid-March Recap
As the Nevada outdoor season moves deeper into March, we're getting a clearer look at event leaders while continuing to introduce new names into the conversation. While several top-end marks held steady at the top of the state leaderboard, depth across sprint, distance, and field events continues to build, especially when paired with breakthrough performances from the previous week.
Sprints & Hurdles
At the top of the sprint standings, Atreju Carandang (Damonte Ranch) delivered one of the premier marks of the week, running 21.68 in the 200 meters to take over the third fastest time in Nevada this season. The performance ranks him favorably him among the top early-season sprinters nationally and reinforces his position as a key name to watch in Nevada.
The 400 meters also saw a new strong competitor emerge, as Tyler Russell (Reed) clocked 51.62 to make his way into the top 25 in the state. Close behind, Cash Torres (McQueen) made his mark in the event after his 51.68 performance from March 13, where the junior dropped nearly two seconds from his previous best of 53.56 to place second in a competitive field of 58 athletes.
Alyssa Dixon (Galena) continues to stand out as one of the most versatile athletes in Nevada. Her 58.79 in the 400 meters leads the state, and when paired with her 18-0 long jump, she has already established herself as a factor across two event groups. Kaylah South (Reed) made an impact in the 200 meters, running 26.02, which makes her one of the top performers of the past week.
Sanyi Thompson (Cimarron-Memorial) delivered one of the more notable sprint breakthroughs of the early season. The sophomore dropped from 12.75 to 12.21 to win the 100 meters at Cimarron Weekday. The time ranks 16th in the state. She followed that with a 25.66 in the 200 meters, improving by over a second in the event.
Mid-Distance & Distance
Distance events continue to develop more gradually, but several athletes have already made significant jumps in performance over the past two weeks.
Liam Hushaw (Foothill) ran a big PB in the 800 meters, dropping from 2:15.32 in February to 2:06.28 at the 46th Irvine T&F Invitational on March 12. The nearly nine-second improvement placed him 11th in a field of 81 competitors and moves him into the top 10% of Nevada performers. Hushaw also showed range with a personal best in the long jump, improving from 16-9 to 17-4.5 at the same meet.
On the girls side, Alexandra Herchik (Coral Academy of Science) has also put together a strong early-season progression. The junior improved her 1600 meters best from 5:46.80 to 5:39.35, finishing third in her race, while also dropping her 800 meters time from 2:43.00 to 2:35.69. Those steady improvements have moved her up the state rankings and position her as a developing presence in both events.
Field Events
Field events produced some of the most significant top-end performances of the week, particularly on the boys side.
Shane Stewart (Damonte Ranch) delivered one of the top marks in the state this season, clearing 7-0 in the high jump. The mark not only leads Nevada, but places him among the top high school jumpers nationally!
In the throws, Isaiah Blinkinsop (Spanish Springs) moved into the state lead in the shot put with a mark of 54-7.5, continuing a trend of strong early-season marks in Nevada's throwing events.
Alex Adelekan (Spanish Springs) added to the state's depth in the long jump, reaching 21-3 to infiltrate the top 10 performers statewide and give Spanish Springs multiple event leaders on the boys side.
Kaylee Landis (McQueen) moved into the top five in the shot put with a throw of 36-3.25, while Alyssa Dixon (Galena)'s 18-0 long jump continues to set the standard in that event.
From the previous week, Kayden Hulet (Sparks) delivered a notable performance on the national stage, throwing 85-0 in the weight throw to take home the win at Nike Indoor Nationals.
Overview
As the season continues, the combination of established leaders and rapidly improving athletes is shaping a more competitive statewide landscape. The past few weeks of March reinforced who currently sits at the top, but just as importantly, it showed how quickly that picture can change as new names emerge through significant personal bests and expanded event ranges.
