Nevada athletes continued to produce standout performances across regional and state championship competition from May 4 through May 10. The week featured dominant distance triples, state-title sprint performances, elite field event marks, and several athletes delivering breakthrough personal bests at the perfect time of the season.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint events were highlighted by a major state championship performance from Dilyn King (Basic High School), who captured the 400 meters at the NIAA 4A State Championship in 48.44. He ran the top 400-meter time by a Nevada sophomore this season and also added a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters in 22.20.
Another standout sprint performance came from Majik McMillion (Mater East Academy), who clocked 10.83 for third place in the 100 meters at the state championships. The performance placed him among the top short sprinters in Nevada this spring against one of the strongest sprint fields assembled statewide this season.
On the girls side, Derriah Wren (Mojave High School) delivered one of the top hurdle performances of the week, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.48 at the NIAA 4A State Championship. Wren also showed strong sprint versatility by placing third in the 200 meters in 24.96.
Several athletes produced major breakthroughs during regional competition. Aalijah Owens (Chaparral) lowered his 100-meter best from 11.54 to 11.09 at the NIAA 4A Mountain Region, moving to #6 among Nevada juniors this season while finishing third in a deep 32-athlete field.
Syirah Stubbs (Canyon Springs) also continued her development with a breakthrough 13.26 performance in the girls 100 meters at the NIAA 4A Desert Region. She improved from 13.71 and now ranks among the top freshman sprinters in Nevada.
In the hurdles, Casen Cox (Pinecrest Academy Cadence) delivered one of the week's most notable all-around improvements. Cox lowered his 110-meter hurdles best from 16.22 to 15.79 at the NIAA 4A Mountain Region, setting a school record while moving to #17 in Nevada. He also displayed massive improvements in the 300 hurdles, dropping from 54.00 to 44.68.
Distance
The distance events were dominated by Reese Leoncavallo (Green Valley High School), who swept all three distance events at the NIAA 4A State Championship. Leoncavallo captured the 800 meters in 1:55.40, the 1600 meters in 4:34.05, and the 3200 meters in 9:51.34, completing one of the most impressive championship distance triples of the Nevada season.
Several distance athletes also delivered major personal-best breakthroughs during regional competition. Austin Ljungquist (Bonanza) improved from 11:35.90 to 11:08.38 in the 3200 meters at the NIAA 4A Desert Region, continuing his steady progression late in the season.
On the girls side, Iscareth Virrueta (Rancho) lowered her 3200-meter best from 13:21.66 to 13:06.33 at the same meet, moving further up the Nevada rankings after placing third in the regional final.
Another significant breakthrough came from Michael Jantson (Green Valley), who dropped from 2:05.14 to 2:02.27 in the 800 meters at the NIAA 4A Desert Region. The improvement moved him into the Nevada top 50 this season while placing fourth in a competitive 25-runner field.
Jumps
The jumps were highlighted by a stellar championship performance from GianCar Crovetto (Green Valley High School), who claimed both horizontal jump titles at the NIAA 4A State Championship. Crovetto won the triple jump at 46-5 before adding the long jump title with a mark of 22-6, solidifying himself among Nevada's top all-around jumpers.
On the girls side, Jayla Fletcher-Thrower (Canyon Springs) captured the long jump title at the state championships with a leap of 18-1, defeating a competitive field to secure another major postseason victory.
Wynn Kelly (Virgin Valley High School) also delivered one of the most complete field-event performances of the week at the NIAA 3A Southern Region. Kelly cleared 5-5 to win the high jump and added a long jump title at 16-7.
Several athletes also produced major improvements in the field events. Max Coronado (Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon) improved from 6-0 to 6-2 in the high jump during the NIAA 4A Desert Region while also running a personal best in the 400 meters, highlighting strong multi-event development late in the season.
Throws
The throws were led by another state championship 'W' from Simon Banks (Sierra Vista High School), who launched the shot put 51-8.75 to win the title at the NIAA 4A State Championship. Banks continued his strong postseason run with one of the top throws recorded statewide this spring.
On the girls side, Samarah Wilkes (Clark High School) captured the shot put title at the state championships with a throw of 36-11.5, leading the field via one of the week's top girls throwing performances.
The discus was highlighted by Tallulah Berckley (The Meadows), who threw 123-4 to win the discus title at the NIAA 3A Southern Region against a 20-athlete field. Berckley also demonstrated impressive range by placing third in the 100-meter hurdles during the same meet.
