Sprints & Hurdles
Maelie Wright (Churchill County High School) put together one of the top all-around performances of the week, winning the Sagebrush League: Fallon MS Meet in 13.18 for the 100 meters before returning to win the 200 meters in 27.19. Wright also cleared 4-8 to share the weekly lead in the high jump.
On the boys side, Jack Harrison Arroyave (Virginia City) swept the sprint titles at the Tah-Neva League: Carson Valley Meet, winning the 100 meters in 12.13 and the 200 meters in 25.78. Caspian McCarthy (Sage Ridge School) followed closely behind with a 12.29 victory in the 100 meters at the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet.
Several athletes also delivered major breakthrough performances. Beckett Norbutas (North Tahoe High) dropped from 18.11 to 14.51 in the 100 meters at the Tah-Neva League: Carson MS Meet, while Shailyn Birrueta (Alder Creek Middle School) improved by more than six seconds in the girls 100 meters, running 16.90.
In the hurdles, Annie Turner (Carson High School) won the Tah-Neva League: Carson MS Meet in 17.79 to lead the girls rankings for the week. Nevada's top boys hurdle improvement came from Gabriel Ludwick (Sage Ridge School), who lowered his 100-meter mark to 12.73 in the sprint action at South Tahoe.
Distance Events
Distance performances were highlighted by strong depth in both the 800 and longer races. Dylan Dubach (Lake Tahoe Track Club/Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) ran 1:01.38 at Track Mania to lead the girls 400 rankings for the week, then followed with a 2:23.00 victory in the 800 meters at the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet.
Avery Aldrich (Alder Creek Middle School) claimed the girls 1600-meter title at the Carson MS Meet in 5:24.00, while Dean Leahy (Lake Tahoe School) led the girls 3200-meter rankings with a 12:50.00 victory at South Tahoe.
For the boys, Phin Pottey (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) broke five minutes with a 4:58.00 win in the 1600 meters at the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet. Peyton Watts (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) posted the top boys long-distance mark of the week with a commanding 10:45.00 win in the 3200 meters.
Several athletes also posted major PR breakthroughs in the distance events. Jayce Lora (Pershing County) improved by over 31 seconds in the 400 meters, running 1:01.32, while Simon Jarvis (Eagle Valley MS) cut more than a minute from his 3200-meter best with a 16:13 performance.
Relays
Relay competition was competitive throughout the week, especially in the Tah-Neva League meets.
South Tahoe High School led the boys 4x100 rankings with a 50.05 victory at the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet, while Eagle Valley MS topped the girls rankings at 56.01 from the same meet.
In the longer relays, South Tahoe High School won the boys 4x400 in 4:07.00 at South Tahoe, while Doral Academy of Northern Nevada led the girls rankings after running 4:40.11 to win the girls 4x400.
Throws
The throws produced several standout efforts, led by Colton Knittel (Carson Valley Middle School), who won the shot put at the Tah-Neva League: Carson Valley Meet with a throw of 44-9. Knittel also added a weekly top-three mark in the long jump and a major triple jump PR.
Tonalli Boyce (Incline High School) led the boys discus rankings with a 111-10 victory at the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet, while Chenoa Kelly (McDermitt) won the girls shot put at the Sagebrush League: Fallon MS Meet with a throw of 32-7.
Among the biggest breakthroughs, Emma Heger (Dayton High School) improved by over 18 feet in the discus with a 51-9 throw, while Michael Griffin (Smith Valley) added more than five feet to his shot put best.
Jumps
Nevada jumpers continued to post some of the state's strongest middle school marks.
Josh Soto (Eureka) led the boys long jump rankings with a 16-8.5 victory at the Sagebrush League: Fallon MS Meet, while Maddie Turner (Carson High School) won the girls long jump at the Carson MS Meet with a 14-5 effort.
In the triple jump, Andrew McGarry (Lake Tahoe School) led with his 34-9 jump to win the Tah-Neva League: South Tahoe MS Meet, while Zoe Zachary (South Tahoe High School) led the girls rankings at 30-5.
The high jump also featured strong performances across the state. Isaac Talbot (Yerington High School) cleared 5-4 to win the Sagebrush League: Fallon MS Meet and lead the boys rankings, while three girls - Maelie Wright (Churchill County High School), Maddi Camper (Carson High School), and Eden Townsend (Whittell Middle School) - shared the weekly lead at 4-8.
Overview
The May 4th-10th competition window showcased strong depth throughout Nevada middle school track and field, especially in the sprint and distance events. Athletes from the Tah-Neva and Sagebrush League meets accounted for many of the week's top marks, while several younger competitors posted dramatic personal-best improvements. With championship season approaching, many of these athletes are beginning to emerge as names to watch across the state.
