Nevada Middle School Track & Field: Top Performers and Breakthroughs from May 11th-17th
Nevada middle school athletes delivered a strong week of performances across the Sagebrush Championship Crusade, Tah-Neva League Track & Field Championships, and NCSAA Championship Meet 9 as championship season continues to intensify.
Sprints & Hurdles
Sprint competition was especially deep throughout Nevada last week.
On the boys side, Isaac Talbot (Yerington High School) led the 100-meter rankings with a 12.32 victory at the Sagebrush Championship Crusade, narrowly ahead of Eli Wagner (Sage Ridge School) at 12.33 and Ian Kim (North Tahoe High) at 12.42, who both went one-two at the Tah-Neva League Meet. Gabe Watkins (Incline High School) topped the boys 200 rankings in 25.61, while Jack Harrison Arroyave (Virginia City) followed at 25.80.
The girls sprints also featured standout performances. Romie I (Coral Academy - Reno) led the girls 100 rankings at 13.31, while Maelie Wright (Churchill County High School) topped the 200 rankings in 27.08 ahead of Romie I at 27.38.
Several athletes also delivered major breakthroughs. Jahaj Lewis (Mater East Academy) dropped from 12.40 to 11.76 in the boys 100, while Zachary Cox (Amplus Academy) improved to 12.26. In the boys 200, Brent Smith (Legacy Traditional - Southwest) lowered his best by more than four seconds to 25.21.
On the girls side, Brooklynn Robinson (The Alexander Dawson School) improved nearly three seconds in the 200 meters to 29.50, while Sierra Malan (Faith Lutheran MS) dropped to 29.55.
The hurdle races also produced strong marks. Maelie Wright (Churchill County High School) led the girls 100-meter hurdles rankings with her victory at the Sagebrush Competition in 17.56. Her time was just ahead of Maddi Camper (Carson High School) at 18.32 and Inez Linares (Silverland Middle School) at 18.43.
Several hurdlers also saw dramatic improvements. Leighton Soukup (Dayton High School) dropped from 30.83 to 25.33, while Lily Aguilera (Coral Academy - Reno) improved more than three seconds to 22.12.
Distance Events
The boys 800 meters featured one of the state's strongest races as Phin Pottey (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) ran 2:13.14 at the Tah-Neva League Meet just ahead of teammate Bryce Parsons (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) at 2:14.06 and Grady Clark (Alder Creek Middle School) at 2:14.37.
In the girls 800, Dylan Dubach (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) led Nevada in 2:25.92, while Avery Aldrich (Alder Creek Middle School) followed at 2:27.89.
The boys 1600at Tah-Neva featured a close finish between Kellen Purvance Rassuch (Alder Creek Middle School) and Grady Clark (Alder Creek Middle School), who ran 4:48.79 and 4:48.94 respectively. On the girls side, Avery Aldrich (Alder Creek Middle School) won the same meet in 5:15.80 ahead of Abigail Forehand (South Tahoe High School) and Dylan Dubach (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada).
Long-distance competition remained strong as Peyton Watts (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) led the boys 3200 rankings at 11:26.20, while Logan Dubach (Doral Academy of Northern Nevada) topped the girls rankings in 13:36.60.
Several athletes also posted major breakthroughs. Maddox Dickinson (Silver Stage High School) dropped more than three minutes in the boys 1600 to run 7:03.95, while Andre Watson (Slam Academy) improved to 5:39.53.
The girls distance events also featured huge improvements. Caroline Gabroy (Henderson International MS) dropped nearly a minute in the 800 meters to run 2:45.69. In the girls 3200, Demi Fuchs (St. Teresa of Avila School) improved nearly two minutes to 16:01.00, while Gwen LaRocca (Eagle Valley MS) lowered her best to 15:55.19.
Relays
Yerington High School led the boys 4x100 rankings in 49.99 ahead of South Tahoe High School at 50.13, while South Tahoe also led the boys 4x400 rankings in 4:02.73.
On the girls side, Alder Creek Middle School topped the 4x100 rankings in 55.44, while North Tahoe High led the girls 4x400 rankings with a 4:30.65 performance.
Throws
On the boys side, Tonalli Boyce (Incline High School) delivered one of the state's top discus marks with a 126-1 throw while also throwing 40-3.5 in the shot put. Colton Knittel (Carson Valley Middle School) led the boys shot put rankings at 43-6.75 ahead of Easton Roots (Yerington High School) at 42-3.
The Tah-Neva Meet was host to some tight throws competition on the girls side, led by Maizy Thompson (Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School), who threw 34-1 in the shot put, narrowly ahead of Riley Hartman (Lake Tahoe School) at 34-0.5. Hartman also led the girls discus rankings at 79-8 ahead of Kyli Clapham (Carson High School) at 78-2.
Several throwers also posted major improvements. Maizy Thompson (Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School) improved more than 11 feet in the shot put, while Tennyson Martin (Lake Tahoe School) added nearly five feet in the shot put and more than 15 feet in the discus.
On the boys side, Wyatt Herold (Churchill County High School) improved nearly 24 feet in the discus, while Joefz Jared Trinos (Legacy Traditional - Southwest) added nine feet to his shot put best.
Jumps
In the boys long jump, Gizmo Pierce (Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School) led the rankings with a 16-5 mark ahead of Jazael Vazquez (South Tahoe High School) at 16-4. Pierce also led the boys high jump rankings after clearing 5-6, while Rowen Killingsworth (South Tahoe High School) topped the triple jump rankings at 35-11.
On the girls side, Skylar Alessandra (Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada) led the long jump rankings at 14-2.25, while Zoe Zachary (South Tahoe High School) topped the triple jump rankings in 29-11. Maelie Wright (Churchill County High School) added another elite mark by clearing 5-2 in the high jump.
Several athletes also delivered major breakthroughs. Peyton Bryant (Churchill County High School) improved more than six feet in the triple jump to reach 25-2, while Hadley Holway (North Tahoe High) improved four feet in the same event.
On the boys side, Dion Johnson Jr (Somerset Losee MS) improved more than three feet in the long jump, while Lowell Harper (Legacy Traditional - Southwest) added over two feet to reach 16-2.
